Mongo and Lyle

In the episode "Springtime", Alex Karras's character (Lyle Wesson) says,
"Lyle bad person. Does bad things." Karras, of course, played Mongo in
"Blazing Saddles", and Mongo spoke exactly the same way. Was this done on
purpose, or is it just a coincidence?

Both the movie and the TV episode were made in 1974, and as I don't know the
respective dates of each (I wasn't even born until eleven years later), I
don't know which came first.
