I have a distinct impression that Sidney was at the University of Chicago
when he was called up.

Could be but I'm sure his home-town was NYC. (Just can't remember which ep but
Aussie Brad should know. He's the maven with these things)

General...
In a recent thread, I mentioned that the only time I can remember Trapper
alluding to a home town was in the Pilot.
When Hammond wanted to arrest Hawkeye and Trapper, Trapper asked if they would
have the trial in San Francisco.
Wasn't San Francisco the first stop for GI's
returning home?
You're correct in saying Trapper interned in Boston, but I don't recall him
mentioning any hospital.

Boston was the novel Trapper John's home and the movie Trapper John's
home. The tv Trapper John specifies in 'Mad Dogs and Servicemen' that
Boston is "where I interned" (when he "wasn't trying to sneak into the
ballpark"); surely not a specification one would make about one's
hometown.
I always assumed that tv Trapper John was from the south somewhere, since
his accent's very like that of Wayne Rogers who's from the south
somewhere. But, with the oblique reference in the pilot and the setting of
TRAPPER JOHN MD, the argument for San Francisco as tv Trapper John's home,
or perhaps adult home but not birthplace, is at least as strong as mine
for somewhere in the south.
Wayne Rogers was born in Birmingham, AL (Apr. 7, 1933) but his voice on
the show doesn't sound to me as if he was from the South. Maybe he moved
somewhere else shortly after?
I had no idea he is 70! He looks terrific when I see him sometimes on
CNBC as a financial pundit.

Trivia from IMDB.com: "When he left MASH, he was sued for breach of
contract, but the case was thrown out because he had no contract. Producers
wanted him to sign a morality clause, in which he could be suspended or
fired at any time, and he refused because he wanted the same privilege
regarding the producers."

Now that's a great switcheroo in tv-movie making if I ever heard one:
an actor getting to fire the producers!
I think this discussion has acheived FAQ status, Elf.
Well, isn't that special!

I understand that that happened on GENE RODDENBERRY'S ANDROMEDA a year
ago. To me it explains a great deal.

I believe she served "under" Gen Barker at Fort Ord.

That's about five years younger than the character was described in the
novel.
